Excellent value for Mid-grade IEM., October 31, 2010
The Sennheiser IE6 IEM's are a great value at $99 from Amazon. They use a dynamic driver, so proper burn-in is a good idea before any critical listening, I burned mine in for 96 hours using varying volume levels and music genres. All of my music is either ALAC or FLAC and I use Cog on OSX or Foobar2000 on Win7. I also used Comply foam tips (Tx400) with these IE6's.
The Pros: 1) decent soundstage - most IEM's at this price point with have little to no depth or width, the IE6's have a decent amount; 2) smooth mids and highs - seems to be a slight emphasis on the mids, but mostly in a nice way, highs are there but definitely relaxed; 3) value - it would be difficult to find a better set of IEM's for under $100.
The Cons: 1) fit - the IEM is and odd shape and seems difficult to get a good seal, I had to move up one size in Comply tips to get the seal I usually get with other IEM's; 2) bass - it's actually strong, but very slightly boomy for my taste; 3) compatibility for all music genres - the IE6 may not be for everyone, they are definitely "relaxed" and a sound which I like with certain types of music.
The IE6 includes several sets of silicone tips, ear guides, a shirt clip, and a metal/plastic case. I use Comply foam tips on all my IEM's, so the tips I don't have an opinion on, but the case, which looks sturdy, is pretty much useless. There's no way I'm using the sliding tray setup of that box which also has compartments for 2 sets of silicone tips on an airplane or subway train, it's just way too cumbersome, really wish they had just included a zippered pouch or hard plastic snap case. The cable on the IE6 is compliant but seems pretty rugged, it is light years better than Klipsch cables, but not as nice as the Westone cables. The cable configuration is in a Y-shape with a sliding adjuster piece, and the 3.5mm jack is L-shaped and NOT gold (as long as it sounds good I don't mind, but it does look weird seeing a silver colored jack in 2010).
Overall, the IE6 is a tough IEM to beat at its price. It is almost insulting to compare it to the Klipsch Image S4 (I also have the S4's), which in my opinion, is outclassed by the IE6 in every department from sound quality to build quality...and for only $20 more. The sound that the IE6 produces (and almost every Sennheiser product I've had) is smooth and very addictive. I have IEM's that sound better from an analytical perspective, but don't seem to have that unique appeal that the IE6 sound has. But this sound isn't for everyone, if you prefer a more in your face sound, like you're in the middle of the action, the IE6 will not appeal to you.

This product is by far one of the best ear buds that I have ever used. Excellent sound at all volumes. I use them on stage in a live performance as well while rehearsing. The sound mixed into the monitor feed is guitar, personal vocals, and a little of the rest of the mix with great fidelity and clarity. Definitely worth the price and not too expensive.
